PRIVATE
INSTRUMENT INSTRUCTION*
Summer
Session: June 23 - August 30, 2008
Private study during the summer offers the student musician untold benefits.
Many use the time to focus on improving their overall musicianship rather than
practicing songs for the school band. Others are interested in exploring new
musical styles. For the novice, private instruction provides the opportunity to
get a head-start on the fundamentals before participating in a school music
program. Instruction is offered on woodwinds, brass, strings, piano, percussion
and guitar.

Private instruction is available on a "per lesson"
basis during the summer, in order to accommodate the varied vacation, camp and
work schedules of our students and faculty. Students may enroll for as many - or
as few - lessons as they like ... and add extra lessons as the summer
progresses. Take a number of lessons each week all summer long, or fit in just
one or two around your other summer plans! Lesson times may vary each week,
depending upon your schedule.

"Try A New Instrument on for Size" This Summer!

'TRY AN INSTRUMENT': 3-Lesson
Introduction to Learning a New Instrument
Three
30-minute Sessions: June 23 - August 30, 2008
The
Ridgewood Conservatory’s introduction to learning a new instrument allows
students to "try an instrument on for size" before taking private lessons or
starting a school music program.
The perfect
choice for students of all ages.
Designed to maximize the success (and minimize the frustration!) of
learning a new instrument, our ‘Try An Instrument’ program is a great way for
children, teens and adults to explore a musical instrument or vocal lessons
without making a long-term commitment to study. The program helps you to:
• Find out if a younger child is
ready for private instrument instruction.
• Let beginners explore more than
one instrument before choosing one to study.
• Provide student-musicians with
the opportunity to try other instruments of interest.
• Get a jump-start on learning to
play an instrument before continuing with private lessons.
In just
three 30-minute private lessons given on consecutive days...
‘Try An Instrument’ students become familiar with their instruments as they
learn to
play two or three simple tunes in a non-competitive environment.
You choose the instrument. We’ll
supply the instrument and all of the materials.
Try one – or try them all*...

Join Us for the Ultimate Music Camp Experience!

EXTREME MUSIC:
TRC's Summer Camp for the Complete Musician*
July 28 - August 8, 2008: 9:30am to
12:30pm, Monday - Friday
EXTREME MUSIC at The
Ridgewood Conservatory is a two-week summer camp designed to train the musician
inside the student. The program is structured to give student-musicians a
heightened awareness of the music they perform by focusing on four specific
areas:
1. Learning the Fundamentals of
Rhythm. Rhythm is the foundation on which every composition is built. By
becoming more rhythmically literate, students internalize the rhythm associated
with it’s notation in each piece of music and enhance their overall performance.
2. Knowing the Melody. Ear
training and sight-singing are invaluable tools in developing intonation and
independent reading skills. Being able to hear the pitch in your head before
it comes out of the instrument, and being able to sing the phrase as written
on the page, allows the student to play in tune and get a feel for the "song"
behind the composition.
3. Understanding the Music. Each
piece of music is a reflection of the era in which it was composed. Getting a
historical and cultural perspective on the music being performed enables the
student-musician to more fully understand what the composer was attempting to
convey when writing his music.
4. Playing in a Small Ensemble
Setting. In a small ensemble, each player is responsible for his/her own
part. Participating in an ensemble requires the student-musician to play his or
her part independently with a sense of strength and security, to be responsible
for rhythm and intonation, and to listen to the other instrumentalists in the
ensemble in order to blend and perform effectively.
EXTREME MUSIC
participants will attend four 40-minute power workshops each day (with a
refueling break mid-morning):
RHYTHM TRAINING
>>Bang On Stuff!
No matter what instrument you play,
you’ll need to understand rhythmical notation, and develop both good rhythm and
steady time. In this workshop, you’ll experience different styles of music and
discover how important percussion is to each, learn rhythmical independence, and
just plain have a blast using drums and percussion from around the world
including drum set, timpani, marimba, vibraphone, congas, bongos and many more.
(Experienced percussionists will be offered a special Classical Mallet course.)
Sight-singing and ear training
>>Make Some Noise! Think of how
much easier making music would be if you could sing what you see on the page,
become familiar with the melody, and hear the pitch in your head before you ever
play a single note. In this workshop, you’ll have a great time while you train
your eyes, your ears and your voice-box to help you improve your sense of pitch,
tone, breathing and sight-reading skills. You might even learn to carry a tune.
(Experienced vocalists will be offered a special Piano for Vocalists course.)
great men, great music
>>Hang With The Champions! Have you ever wondered what made
Bach baroque, Mozart classical and Tchaikovsky romantic? In this workshop you’ll
explore the life and times of the key composers of Western music and discover
all the serious and silly reasons these all-stars were truly masters of their
time. It’s your chance to get inside the heads of many of the top musical minds
so you can perform their music the way they originally intended it to be played.
small group ensembles
>>Time To Mix It Up! Playing as a soloist is all well and
good, but being a valued member of a team of like-minded student-musicians will
expand your repertoire, strengthen your technique and widen your musical
horizons. Placement in a small group ensemble will be determined by both your
level of proficiency and your interests. Whether you choose to be in a classical
or improvisational group, you’ll have fun performing pieces tailored to enhance
your musicianship. (Ensemble placement by
audition.)
* Extreme Music is open to student-musicians entering grades 3-12,
with a minimum of one year of study on an instrument or voice.
